Each month, our Essay of the Month contest challenges
the students to write and edit their own writings based on
monthly topics. Each student is responsible for an essay,
which they pick from a variety of topics, and are
encouraged to research, draft, and complete their own
essay. One winner from each class is then picked as the
Essay of the Month Winner and goes out to lunch with the
other winners of the month!
These are the topics that student's can choose from for their March Essay of the Month!
1. PLANTS
Have students include this sentence somewhere in a story:

"I tiptoed into the greenhouse. It was dark and quiet and filled with thousands of
plants. Suddenly, a long, trailing vine....."

2. WEATHER
Many stories take place during storms. Have students write a story in which the
weather plays a major role in the plot.
3. WOMEN IN HISTORY
Suffragists persuaded 36 states to sign the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to
vote. Ask students: What privilege, right, or freedom do you think you deserve? Then have
students write an essay that persuades someone to grant them their new privilege, right, or
freedom.

4. NUTRITION MONTH
  Instructions:
Good nutrition starts with healthful cooking. Have students write instructions for preparing a
  favorite healthful meal.

Recipe Book:
Have students create a recipe book of healthful recipes. Ask students to use the Internet to
research recipes and determine whether each recipe suggested is healthy. Students can
copy the healthy recipes on decorative paper. Design and draw a cover for the book or
use clip art. Copy and bind all pages so that all students can bring home their own recipe
  book.
