Coastal Learning Center Inc., founded in 1974 in Lakewood, NJ, has three state approved private day schools serving special needs students ages 5-21. The schools
located in Howell, Morganville, and Tuckerton provide a unique, nurturing, hands-on environment that develops a solid education and strengthens students' personal
growth. The program prepares them for return to public school and, ultimately, an independent, productive life after graduation. A variety of teaching styles; close
student-teacher relationships; and open communication make us unique. Our self-contained classes, with a maximum of twelve students, allow staff members to get to
know each student on a individual basis.
At CLC, our main focus is on education and personal growth. We create a secure and accepting environment built on a foundation of trust and mutual respect. This
encourages our students to embrace learning - about themselves, their peers and the professionals with whom they interact. Our students learn the importance of
accepting differences in race, ethnicity, and culture. They learn to recognize and accept the individual situations of different people.
Graduation celebrates the transition to a new stage in life for our students. Each student who graduates is given the opportunity to walk with his or her local district. Some of
our campuses offer an additional graduation ceremony. Students are formally honored for their achievements and growth while at Coastal Learning Center and move on to
other endeavors carrying with them the core values they learned and lived:
Knowledge and Skills
Compassion and Understanding
Trusting, Honest Relationships
Flexibility
Understanding Emotions
Self Esteem and Self-Worth

On March 26th, 2010, Coastal Learning Center-Tuckerton Campus, hosted their annual
Smithville Conference in Smithville, New Jersey. The conference, titled "The Positive
Power of Humor," was a great success and showcased ways in which to use humor as a
positive use in the classroom as well as in counseling. The speaker, Rosemarie D.
Powerman, gave the audience useful information and lots of laughs as she spoke of
creating optimal counseling climates, using the humor mind-set, and the value of humor &
laughter in the school setting. Everyone that attended was engaged in the seminar & left
with knowledge to bring back to their schools (as well as clown noses).
The conference kept the audience laughing as Rosemarie Powerman explained the benefits of humor in the schools. The beautiful setting of the Smithville Inn served as a backdrop for a great day of learning and laughter (and good food)!
